Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a GIS Technician in Planning, Development, and Design, a department within Institutional Planning & Operations. Under the guidance and direction of the Manager of GIS Services, this position is responsible for providing critical support to university planning and operations by creating, maintaining, and making available geospatial information pertaining to the university’s statewide physical footprint, infrastructure, and resources.  

Among the key duties of this position are the following: 

• Collect, edit, analyze, and audit geospatial data; ensure accuracy by updating geometry, attributes, and metadata 
• Support the accuracy and reliability of the university’s web-based map application 
• Support division planning efforts by creating clear, accurate, and informative maps and developing high-quality graphics 
• Convert data between software such as CAD to GIS or GIS to CAD using pre-developed tools; create GIS data from other sources such as CAD, surveys, deeds, and orthoimagery 
• Use Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and/or mobile applications to perform field data collection and Microsoft Excel and Access to create databases; assist in geodatabase and data dictionary design 
• Support Manager in strategic planning efforts and enhancements to the university’s web-based map application 
• Provide technical support and customer service to users of the university’s GIS resources
