One of my deep secrets when I got into this field nearly 27 years ago was that I have some color blindness issues. They are mild, in the grand scheme of things, but present. I always hid it until a few years back when I realized it was a superpower. I don’t make maps with similar shades because I cannot see the difference. Sadly, I don’t suffer from ‘ugly map’ issues, so I am still faulty for making those sometimes! In answer to the original question; as many others have stated, color brewer has been a wonderful tool for all things color. To be honest, I usually talk about color vision deficiencies as superpowers for map design, since folks with them are much more likely to design a map that is colorblind-friendly! I also have a web browser plugin called "Let's Get Color Blind" that allows you to simulate different kinds and degrees of color vision deficiency.
