Heather, I think this is exactly correct.  One of my deep secrets when I got into this field nearly 27 years ago was that I have some color blindness issues.  They are mild, in the grand scheme of things, but present.  I always hid it until a few years back when I realized it was a superpower.  I don’t make maps with similar shades because I cannot see the difference.  Sadly, I don’t suffer from ‘ugly map’ issues, so I am still faulty for making those sometimes!

In answer to the original question; as many others have stated, color brewer has been a wonderful tool for all things color.

Be well all,

-Rob

Hi Adam,

Great question! To be honest, I usually talk about color vision deficiencies as superpowers for map design, since folks with them are much more likely to design a map that is colorblind-friendly! I wonder if that reframing might help encourage the student and whether the tools might be useful for the class as a whole? :)

Other suggestions that more tangibly answer your question: ColorBrewer is probably integrated into ArcGIS Pro styles at this point, but in case not, it's here. I also have a web browser plugin called "Let's Get Color Blind" that allows you to simulate different kinds and degrees of color vision deficiency. That or another web plugin could be helpful if you do work in ArcGIS Online.

cheers,

Heather

Hi all,

I have a student that has color vision deficiencies and is looking for some resources and recommendations. I have found accessible styles that can be loaded into ArcGIS Pro and have located the Color Vision Deficiency Simulator tool. Would anyone be so kind as to share some other resources so I may help this student succeed?

Many thanks,

Adam
