Dear NEARC Community,

I wanted to share with you all the sad news of the passing of a true pioneer and hero of GIS here in Vermont, Gary Smith.  Gary was so integral to the development of the careers of so many GIS users and professionals not only here in Vermont but nationwide as he molded the minds of University of Vermont (UVM) students and opened their eyes to the power of GIS.  He acquired the first ESRI license in New England and was one of the early founders of NEARC.   Gary taught me so much and I am forever grateful for the opportunity he gave me back in the early 90’s.  He was such a smart and joyful person with a passion for the power of GIS.  More details of Gary’s full and impressive life can be seen on his obituary via this link Gary Scott Smith Obituary - Essex Junction, VT | A W Rich Funeral Home (awrichfuneralhomes.com).
