CISS Services on Monday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 4, 2023

The Center for International Students and Scholars (CISS) will not offer in-person services on Monday, July 3, 2023, but staff will be working remotely.  Students with brief questions may use virtual drop in services from 1:30-3:30 p.m. CISS will be closed for the Independence Day holiday on Tuesday, July 4, 2023. There will be no virtual drop-in services on this day. The 4th of July is traditionally celebrated with backyard barbecues and fireworks displays.  Many cities all over Connecticut will have fireworks displays starting tonight.  Visit: https://www.ctvisit.com/articles/connecticut-fireworks-2023 for more information.

Staffing Updates at the Center for International Students and Scholars

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is sad to announce that Sarah Manning’s last day with ISSS was on June 16, 2023.  Sarah worked as an international advisor at the ISSS since 2016. In her time at ISSS Sarah worked with undergraduate international students and later with students and scholars in CLAS-social sciences, UCAELI, and School of Fine Arts. Sarah will be missed at ISSS, but can still be found at UConn as the new Program Advisor for the MBA program.

ISSS is pleased to announce that Huong Pham and Catherine Barachkova will assume the role of International Advisor starting July 1. Huong Pham has worked for the Center for International Students and Scholars since August 2021 as International Programs Coordinator.  Huong came to ISSS having previously worked as an International Student Advisor at Kansas State University for over five years and later as a Graduate Studies Specialist at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. Huong will advise students in the School of Fine Arts, UCAELI as well as CLAS students with majors in Social Sciences and Mathematics.

Catherine Barachkova has been serving international students and scholars at the ISSS since 2015.   Catherine’s most recent role was as an International Services Specialist, but in her time at UConn she has also served as FYE Instructor for international students and a UConn Connects mentor. Catherine holds a master's degree in International Studies from North Carolina State University.  Prior to joining the ISSS Catherine worked in healthcare in the Chicago Metro area.  Catherine will advise all international visiting scholars at the Storrs campus.

Lastly, CISS is happy to welcome Yuria Yamamoto and Chorok Kang (Bella) to our team of student workers this summer.  Yuria Yamamoto is a rising junior double majoring in Physiology and Neurobiology and Environmental Science. Yuria was born in Japan but have lived in the US her whole life. Yuria is excited to be studying abroad in Korea this fall! Chorok Kang (Bella) is a rising senior majoring in Statistics. She is from South Korea and was an exchange student in Austin, Texas before attending a college in Seattle. Bella transferred to UConn in her junior year!

Best,

Arthur
