Clark University’s Graduate School of Geography is seeking an Adjunct Instructor to teach the Introduction to Geographic Information Science (GISc) course in the fall 2023 (GEOG 190). This course introduces Geographic Information Science (GIS) as a powerful mapping and analytical tool. Topics include GISc data structure, map projections, and fundamental GISc techniques for spatial analysis. Laboratory exercises concentrate on applying concepts presented in lectures and incorporate two widely used GISc software packages - IDRISI (created by Clarklabs) and ArcGIS (created by ESRI). These exercises include examples of GISc applications in environmental modeling, socio-demographic change and site suitability analyses. Although the course is computer-intensive, no programming background is required. This appointment will begin in late August 2023 and end with the submission of final grades at the term’s end. A Teaching Assistant will support the instructor, appointed by the Graduate School of Geography. As with other faculty appointments, teaching customarily includes course development, class
time, class preparation, suitable office hours, “4th hour”1 oversight (lab, discussion groups, events, etc.), grading, finals, classroom accounting, and other responsibilities commonly associated with university-level teaching. The part-time faculty member hired for this position will only be responsible for duties associated with teaching. The course is scheduled to be taught in-person on Tuesday/Thursday from 9:00 – 10:15 AM with a lab scheduled for Monday morning from 8:00 – 9:50 AM.
